Križevo - traditional holy day of the islanders
'Križevo' is an ancient religious custom of holding a common mass on the last Sunday in April. In the early morning hours processions from all the parishes on the island with crosses and flags head for the town of Rab where they are joined by the faithful from the town carrying the miraculous image of Our Lady from the Monastery of St. Andrew. Women in the procession, dressed in traditional folk costumes, together with men sing church songs and recite prayers. The common mass is held in the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 10:00 am.
The vow is associated with the epidemic of the plague which ravaged the island in the mid-15th century. Suppressed by this great misfortune, many people found salvation and hope in their faith and pledged themselves and their descendants to their Saviour Jesus Christ.
